Abstract

The empirical analysis, like the overall project design, is the result of a cooperation between four academic research teams and five leading German universal banks. The participating banks are Bayerische Vereinsbank, DG Bank, Deutsche Bank, Dresdner Bank and West LB. This group of institutions represents a cross-section of the German banking system, comprising as it does the three largest private-sector banks, the apex cooperative bank and the largest apex savings bank. We obtained a total sample of 200 borrowers, consisting of 40 borrowers per bank. The samples of each bank were drawn in the same way.
